Teana Hybrid preview

Aside Subaru's crowd-pulling Impreza concept, Nissan is aiming for a slice of action in the Toyota Camry Hybrid segment

Nissan
Ellure

What is it?

The Ellure is previewing two things for Nissan: the new design direction of the Maxima mid-size saloon (modified as Teana for Asian markets) and a hybrid drivetrain to lock horns with the Toyota Camry Hybrid. The Ellure's 2.4-litre inline-four, electric motors and CVT transmission generate an impressive 270hp.

Will it be made? Maybe not exactly as it is today, but the nextgeneration Maxima and Teana should be getting the design language and technical credentials.

Cadillac
Urban Luxury Concept

What is it?

Keeping up with the downsizing trend in the luxury car market, General Motors's upscale brand is experimenting with a small hatchback to rival the Mercedes-Benz A-class. The Urban Luxury has a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, dual-clutch automatic, auto stop/go and a claimed 28kpl record.

Will it be made? It could, if Cadillac wants to compete in Europe. But before it can be made, Chevrolet may nick the powertrain first for its Aveo/Spark hatchbacks.

Toyota
RAV4 EV

What is it?

Toyota has joined hands with electric car specialist Tesla in which the latter supplies pure electric drivetrain for its RAV4 compact SUV. As with most others EVs, the RAV4 can run for 160km; it's 100kg heavier than a V6-powered RAV4.

Will it be made? In limited numbers for the US _ just as it happened with the first-generation RAV4 EV more than 10 years ago.

Honda
Fit EV

What is it?

This full electric version of the Fit, aka Jazz, whose power is backed by lithium-ion battery claims to offer the performance of a normal 2.0-litre engine with a drive range of 160km. Note the slighty different front end.

Will it be made? In limited numbers for the US and Japan in 2012.
