Enrico Ferrari fears Monza could lose out to Rome if Bernie Ecclestone gives the capital a grand prix.

Ecclestone is keen to see Rome join the F1 fraternity, hosting a grand prix through the streets of the city. However, Italy already has a race, the Italian GP, which is held at the Monza circuit.

And Ferrari, who heads the circuit, fears Rome's arrival could signal the end of the Monza grand prix.

"Ecclestone's plan is to have glamour cities host grands prix," he told Bloomberg.

"Amid a globalization of grands prix, each country will inevitably be allowed to stage only one (and ) since Rome is the capital, I'm afraid we'd lose the grand prix forever."

Ferrari also believes Formula One does not need yet another street circuit.

"Formula One is all about speed," he said. "There are very few circuits out there that offer the right conditions for speed and for passing: Silverstone, Spa and Monza.

"Attempts to create those conditions in glamorous cities haven't quite measured up. You don't get the spectacle of sheer speed."

Ecclestone, though, says it's still early days in the plans for Rome to host a race

"We haven't got a contract yet for the event," said the F1 supremo. "As soon as they get that 'Yes, yes, we can have a race,'' then let's see if we can make it happen."
