Sebastian Vettel Q&A: Interlagos should suit Red Bull
Some might regard Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel as the moral championship leader, given his unfortunate combination of sheer pace and reliability problems. However, that’s of little consolation to the young German, who had the last race in Korea under complete control until his engine went bang. He insists that misfortune will simply drive him all the harder at Interlagos this weekend…
Q: Sebastian, how is your emotional state right now?
Sebastian Vettel: Not different than at any other race. The important thing will be to see how the car works - and how fast the others are - and then you know whereabouts you’re staying.
Q: How would you yourself judge your chances for the title?
SV: The chance is there and there is that saying that hope dies last, but of course it looked better not so long ago. What we will be concentrating on is to get the maximum out of the two remaining races - in a best case scenario to win both races. The rest is not in our hands.
Q: There has been so much speculation lately about whether Red Bull will move towards some sort of team order. How much have you been talking internally about that matter?
SV: Much less - or compared to what was going through the media, not at all. I think the approach has not changed and both of us will concentrate on our own race, but for sure also get the best out of it for the team in regards to the constructors’ championship. To say it clearly: you don’t have to be a mathematical whizz to see that both of us still have chances for the title, so both of us are still in the race for the title.
Q: Would you play a supportive role if the team demanded it?
SV: Would and if… I am not losing sleep over such scenarios. I will focus on what is important - and this is clearly not part of it.
Q: So tell us what is the motto of this weekend?
SV: The same as at all 18 races before. Winning is the goal. Not more and not less. If we have the chance to win we will grab it with both hands.
Q: How is your fighting spirit? Like a raging bull?
SV: Yes, like a red bull. I am in good spirits, even if the last race was kind of a setback in light of the title fight. But the chance is still there and even if it sounds trite to say that things can change very fast, that is exactly what we have seen so many times this season - so why not once in our favour?
Q: If you look at the track, where do you see the advantage being on your side and where do you see Ferrari and McLaren being in front?
SV: Like everywhere else this season - when it comes to corners the advantage is ours and when it comes to straights it’s theirs, even if I have to say that over the last couple of races we made quite a significant leap forward when it comes to straights, as our F-duct system was constantly improving. My guess is that this will also play an important role this weekend, on the part where the track goes uphill. I think overall this track should work for us.
Q: The weather has always played an important role at this track. What is your information of the expected conditions?
SV: From what I have heard there is a chance of rain on Saturday and to be honest that is not something that bothers us, as we have demonstrated lately that rain is something that we know to handle very well.
