Domenicali: “Abu Dhabi is the past, now there is a great desire to fight back”
Madonna di Campiglio, 12 January – There was a vast number of questions during a three-hour, marathon media session, what with a press conference and TV and radio interviews that constituted the main part of Stefano Domenicali’s day at Madonna di Campiglio. There was no way the 2010 season could be ignored, especially the way it all ended in Abu Dhabi. As usual, the Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro Team Principal had a very reasoned approach to those events. “Everyone reckons that it was all down to Abu Dhabi and the mistake made there, but the truth is that the championship was lost in the early part of the season, when we failed to pick up the points that were within our grasp. At the final race we missed a decisive penalty shot, but as is the case in football, the best thing to do is to take another one immediately, to consign the mistake to history, even if it does not wipe out all the good work we did earlier. I clearly remember that, at the start of the summer, no one would have bet a single Euro on our chances of challenging to the end, but then we all know how it turned out. Now, throughout the team, there is a great will to do well and to put behind us this bad end to a season which was nevertheless a positive one, especially the second half, when we put on a great show of concentration and determination in what was definitely not an easy situation.”
From a personal point of view, I can confirm that I did consider that it would be the right thing to do as team boss, and therefore the person ultimately responsible for every decision, to hand in my resignation, but I also told myself that it would be the wrong decision,” continued Domenicali. “Sure, in the days immediately after, I felt downhearted but then that changed with the support I got, first and foremost from President Montezemolo, but also the thousands of messages of support that came from all over, from partners to fans which only served to sustain my will to react. Apart from that, there’s no point crying over spilt milk, as all it does is goes our opponents an advantage.”

Madonna di Campiglio, 12 gennaio – Tante le domande dei giornalisti nelle oltre tre ore di maratona mediatica, fra conferenza stampa e interviste con radio e televisioni, che hanno caratterizzato la giornata di Stefano Domenicali a Madonna di Campiglio. Non potevano mancare i riferimenti alla stagione 2010 e, soprattutto, all’epilogo di Abu Dhabi. Il giudizio del Team Principal della Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro è, come suo costume, molto razionale: “Negli occhi di tutti c’è Abu Dhabi e l’errore commesso lì ma la verità è che il campionato lo abbiamo perso all’inizio della stagione non raccogliendo quei punti che erano nelle nostre possibilità. All’ultima gara abbiamo sbagliato un calcio di rigore decisivo ma, come accade ai calciatori, in questi casi la cosa migliore è tirarne subito un altro per mandare in archivio quell’errore che però non può cancellare quanto di buono era stato fatto prima. Mi ricordo bene che, all’inizio dell’estate, nessuno avrebbe scommesso un euro sulle nostre chance di arrivare fino in fondo e invece sapete tutti com’è andata. Adesso in tutta la squadra c’è una gran voglia di fare bene e di buttarsi alle spalle un brutto epilogo di una stagione comunque positiva, soprattutto nella seconda parte, quando abbiamo dato una grande dimostrazione di concentrazione e determinazione in una situazione certamente non facile.”
“Da un punto di vista personale, confermo che ho pensato se sarebbe stato giusto come capo della squadra e, pertanto, responsabile ultimo di ogni decisione, dare le dimissioni ma mi sono anche detto che sarebbe stata una decisione sbagliata” – ha proseguito Domenicali – “Certo, nei giorni successivi eravamo abbattuti ma poi, anche grazie al supporto che ci ha dato prima di tutto il Presidente Montezemolo ma anche le migliaia di messaggi di sostegno che ci sono arrivati da ogni parte, dai partner ai tifosi, è subentrata la voglia di reagire. Del resto, è inutile piangersi troppo addosso, anche perché non facciamo altro che dare un vantaggio ai nostri avversari.”
