Massa: “The team believes in me”
Madonna di Campiglio, 13 January – Felipe Massa is now the Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro veteran. Since the farewell to Luca Badoer, the Brazilian driver is the man with the longest service for the red team. Under contract with Maranello since 2001, Felipe is now in his sixth season as an official Ferrari driver. “My target for this season is simple: to win races and to fight for the title,” said Felipe. “I know that things didn’t go well last year but that is the past. I believe I can return to fight for the crown and I have nothing else in my mind. I am happy to start the year here at Wrooom: it’s a very enjoyable week. As I’ve now been coming here for so long, I’ve also learnt to appreciate snow, something that we Brazilians don’t see very often. I’ve always enjoyed skiing because I did in on water when I was young. Here I’ve also learned how to do it on snow.”
On the causes of his difficulties last season, the Brazilian driver explained: “I was never comfortable with the tyres, in particular the front ones. I didn’t manage to adapt my driving style to those tyres, which were very different to the ones from 2009. That took its toll, especially in qualifying and when the available compounds were the hardest ones. There were never problems with motivation, not even after a difficult weekend like Hockenheim. Fernando was better than me but I know my potential and I know that the team believes in me. In the past I’ve always had very strong team-mates, like Michael and Kimi, but I’d never found myself in a situation of not being comfortable with the car, as I had in 2010. The critics? They haven’t hurt me, what troubled me was not having the results I wanted.”

Madonna di Campiglio, 13 gennaio – Felipe Massa è ormai il veterano della Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro. Con l’addio di Luca Badoer, il pilota brasiliano è quello con la più lunga militanza in rosso. Sotto contratto con Maranello sin dal 2001, Felipe è alla sua sesta stagione nella veste di pilota ufficiale della Ferrari: “Il mio obiettivo per questa stagione è semplice: vincere delle gare e lottare per il titolo. So bene che, l’anno scorso, le cose non sono andate bene ma è il passato: sono fiducioso di poter tornare a lottare per il vertice e io non ho in mente altro che questo. Sono contento di cominciare l’anno qui a Wrooom: è una settimana molto divertente e, venendo qui ormai da tanto tempo, ho anche imparato ad apprezzare la neve, un elemento che per noi brasiliani non è esattamente frequente incontrare. A me è sempre piaciuto lo sci perché da piccolo lo facevo sull’acqua: qui ho imparato anche a farlo sulla neve.”
Sulle cause che hanno reso complicata la scorsa stagione il pilota brasiliano è molto esplicito: “Non mi sono mai trovato a mio agio con gli pneumatici, in particolare quelli anteriori. Non sono riuscito ad adattare il mio modo di guidare a quelle gomme, molto diverse rispetto a quelle del 2009, e ciò si è fatto sentire soprattutto in qualifica e quando le mescole disponibili erano le più dure. Non ci sono mai stati problemi di motivazione, nemmeno dopo un weekend difficile come quello di Hockenheim. Fernando è stato migliore di me ma io conosco le mie potenzialità e so che la squadra crede in me. In passato ho sempre avuto dei compagni di squadra molto forti, come Michael e Kimi, ma non mi ero mai trovato nella situazione di non essere a posto con la vettura come è stato nel 2010. Le critiche? Non mi hanno ferito, quello che mi è dispiaciuto è non aver reso come avrei voluto.”
