Petrov: Kubica isn't much of a teacher
Vitaly Petrov has revealed that team-mate Robert Kubica did very little to help him during his debut season with Renault in 2010.
Petrov struggled to get to grips with Formula One last season, scoring just 27 points compared to 136 bagged by his Polish team-mate.
The Russian's lacklustre results, combined with one too many crashes, came close to ending his F1 career almost before it had begun. However, Renault, after much debate, finally opted to retain Petrov for a second season.
And although Petrov is in no way blaming Kubica for his trying first season, he has revealed that he wasn't given much help at all from the Pole.
"If you're team-mates with Robert you can't learn anything from him because he's a closed person, so you just watch his data, how he's working, what he says to the engineers and that's it," Petrov said.
"I didn't learn so much from him, but I learned his way of driving from the data, and (learned from) how he talked with his engineers."
Petrov's 2010 campaign, though, did end on a high note as he bagged sixth place in the season-ending Abu Dhabi, even managing to hold off the challenge of Championship-hopeful Fernando Alonso.
"It's like 'welcome to Formula 1', because it's very difficult as a rookie - learning the tracks, the cars and how Formula 1 works," Petrov said of 2010.
"I had a little bit of pressure, a little bit of nerves, but then finally I found the solution and I think it's working. Next season I hope will be easier for me."
