Under the umbrella of art
According to legend, it all started more than a century ago when a Buddhist monk named Phra Intha of Wat Bo Sang brought the art of umbrella making from Burma to Chiang Mai after his long pilgrimage. The monk travelled to many places and the Thai-Burmese border where a villager gave him a beautiful rain- and sunlight-proof umbrella. He studied and then introduced that art to Bo Sang. Nowadays, hundreds of people in San Kamphaeng and Doi Saket districts make hand-painted umbrellas for a living.

This year, the annual Bo Sang Umbrella Festival will take place in Bo Sang from Jan 21-Jan 23 during 9am-midnight. Visitors can enjoy shopping for umbrellas and other handicrafts at special prices and view umbrella making, wood carving, local ways of life, kad moi (an open-air local market), a flower float and a street fair. Among the highlights will be a parade of beauty queen candidates riding bikes with one hand while holding an umbrella in the other.
