Patong Tuk-Tuk Fare Maximums Set for Governor to Sign

NEW maximum fares for Patong tuk-tuks will become legal as soon as the Governor of Phuket, Tri Augkaradacha, signs the paperwork, a meeting heard today.

The meeting at Provincial Hall in Phuket City was told that 200 baht will be set as the maximum for trips around Patong - including to Kalim, the bay to the north of Patong - for as many as four passengers, with an extra 50 baht per passenger above four.

A fee for waiting time for tuk-tuks has yet to be decided. The rates are maximums and subject to negotiation downwards, the meeting heard.

Once the Governor has signed off on the rates, police will have the power to arrest drivers who ask for more than the maximums, the meeting was told.

The setting of maximum rates is unlikely to placate critics who say that high tuk-tuk fares are the biggest source of complaints from tourists.

After dark, the tuk-tuks have a virtual monopoly on transport for those who do not have a vehicle of their own.

In many cases, the critics say, tourists would be better off renting vehicles that are sometimes cheaper for hire all day than a single short trip in a tuk-tuk.
