The State Railway of Thailand will introduce promotional packages to boost the number of commuters using its Airport Rail Link Express Line, which now attracts just 700 commuters a day.

The initiative was agreed yesterday at a meeting of the SRT Electric Train Co, which operates the Airport Rail Link, to try to put an end to the firms' losses.

Under the plan the SRT Electric Train Co would soon call a meeting with airlines to discuss promotional packages, including fare discounts, for tourists using the Express Line.

Chairat Sa-nguansue, chairman of the SRT Electric Train Co board, said the board has assigned board member Suchatchawee Suwannasawat and SRT deputy governor Pakorn Tangjetsakow to draw up a strategy to cut expenses and raise the revenues of the company which had fallen short of targets due to the low number of commuters using the line.

The Express Line runs non-stop from Makkasan to Suvarnabhumi airport, attracts only 700 commuters a day, below the target of 2,200 a day, said Mr Chairat.

Mr Pakorn, who supervises the SRT Electric Train Co, said average revenue of the company was 35 million baht a month, while its expenses stood at 77 million baht a month. If the number of commuters using the Express Line met its target of 2,200, the company's revenue could be increased by 9 million baht a month, he said.
