FACT SHEET

FLOODING IN SOUTHERN THAILAND

As of March 29, 2011 / 17.00 hrs

Provinces in mid-southern Thailand, including Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani, Chumphon, Phattalung, Trang, and Krabi, have been affected by floods due to heavy rains. The flooding is mainly affecting low-lying land and areas near major waterways. These provinces are approximately 400-600 kilometres south of Bangkok and 950-1,200 kilometres south of Chiang Mai. Other tourist destinations within Thailand outside of these provinces have not been affected.

Due to the floods and current weather conditions, flights to and from Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport and Samui Airport have been temporarily suspended until weather clears.

Other airports in southern Thailand such as in Phuket and Hat Yai remain operating as per normal.

Ferry services to Koh Pha Ngan, Koh Tao, Koh Samui, as well as other smaller islands, are temporarily suspended due to rough seas.

Train services from Bangkok to southern provinces are also temporarily suspended due to the flooding. Train services elsewhere in Thailand are operating as per normal.

The flooding in the southern provinces is expected to subside within the next several days as weather conditions improve.

Elsewhere in Thailand, the situation for residents and visitors remains normal. All transportation links are operating as per usual, as is Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Tourists are advised to get updates for weather forecast if they plan to travel to the mid-southern provinces that have been affected by the flooding.
