Sepang, 8 April - It might seem strange for the official Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro press release to talk about the team having had a busy Friday, doing a lot of work. After all, isn’t that what preparing for a Grand Prix should be all about? Yes, but with factors such as tracks being green and a bit dirty on the first day and a need to conserve tyres and look after engine mileage, it is not always the case that cars run all the time during Friday’s three hours of free practice.
However, having analysed all the data from the opening round of the season in Australia a fortnight ago, the engineers had come up with a very long job list to work through today, adding aerodynamic evaluations to the usual tasks of set-up and tyre comparison. Over a hundred laps between Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa delivered a lot of answers, but they also confirmed that the situation has not changed significantly in terms of the order among the teams, with two of Ferrari’s rivals, Red Bull and McLaren still having the edge over the F150º Italia cars. In fact Felipe Massa ended the day with the sixth fastest time and Fernando Alonso was ninth, although both men encountered traffic on their quick laps.
Mark Webber topped the time sheet for Red Bull Racing, ahead of the McLaren duo of Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton, while reigning world champion, Sebastian Vettel was fourth, with another German who happens to have six more world championship titles than the Red Bull man, Michael Schumacher, fifth for Mercedes ahead of Felipe. There remains one more hour of free practice, starting tomorrow at 13h00, before qualifying at 16h00. There is a heavy chance of rain for the grid-deciding session, although it has to be said that, at least ninety minutes after that time on Friday, the track was still dry, so maybe a wet track is not as much of a foregone conclusion as the pundits are predicting.

Sepang, 8 aprile - Potrebbe sembrare strano il fatto che il comunicato stampa ufficiale della Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro parli dell'occupatissimo venerdì che ha avuto la Ferrari, dove è stato fatto davvero un bel po' di lavoro. Dopotutto, non è ciò che dovrebbe avvenire sempre durante la preparazione del Gran Premio? Sì, ma alcuni fattori, come la pista verde e un po' sporca del primo giorno e il bisogno di conservare gli pneumatici e tenere a bada il chilometraggio del motore, hanno fatto sì che la vettura fosse impegnata lungo tutte le tre ore di prove libere del venerdì, cosa che non è sempre la regola.
Comunque, avendo analizzato tutti i dati della gara di apertura della stagione in Australia 15 giorni fa, gli ingegneri hanno stilato una lunga lista di lavori da svolgere durante la giornata, con l'aggiunta di alcune valutazioni aerodinamiche ai compiti abituali di confronto tra set-up e pneumatici. Oltre un centinaio di giri tra Fernando Alonso e Felipe Massa hanno dato molte risposte, ma hanno anche confermato che la situazione non è cambiata significativamente in termini di ordine nei team, con i due rivali della Ferrari, Red Bull e McLaren, che hanno ancora un margine significativo sulle Ferrari 150° Italia. Infatti, Felipe Massa ha finito la giornata di prove con il sesto tempo e Alonso con il nono, nonostante entrambi abbiano trovato traffico nei loro giri veloci.
Mark Webber si è trovato al primo posto dei tempi per la Red Bull Racing, davanti al duo McLaren composto da Jenson Button e Lewis Hamilton, mentre il campione del mondo in carica, Sebastian Vettel, si è posizionato quarto, con un altro tedesco che vanta sei titoli di campione del mondo in più rispetto al pilota della Red Bull, Michael Schumacher, quinto per la Mercedes davanti a Felipe. Adesso rimane ancora un'ora di prove libere, domani alle 13, prima delle qualifiche programmate per le 16. C'è una forte possibilità di pioggia per la sessione che deciderà la griglia, nonostante sia stato detto che, dopo meno di 90 minuti del venerdì, la pista era ancora asciutta, quindi forse la pista bagnata non è poi così scontata come predicono gli esperti.
