Loans: Ajose strikes

18/04/2011 12:00, Report by Mark Froggatt

Nine young Reds are currently on loan away from Old Trafford. Catch up on how they are performing here...

Nicky Ajose was once again on the scoresheet for Bury, netting the opener during the Shakers' comfortable 2-0 win over Barnet in League Two. The United striker, who scored twice in the 4-2 win over Northampton last week, latched on to Kyle Bennett’s pass to chip over the onrushing keeper and take his tally to 13 this season.

In the Premier League, Danny Welbeck played 70 minutes for Sunderland in their 2-0 defeat to fellow relegation-battlers Birmingham. Welbeck, who has netted six times this season, linked up well with strike partner Asamoah Gyan but was unable to find the back of the net at St Andrew's.

Tom Cleverley’s Wigan Athletic moved out of the relegation zone for the first time this season with a crucial 3-1 win over Blackpool at Bloomfield Road. The United youngster was instrumental in the victory and played a full game in midfield.

Mame Biram Diouf was an unused substitute in Blackburn’s 2-0 defeat to Everton.

Moving to the Championship, Ritchie de Laet was helpless to prevent Portsmouth’s 3-0 defeat to high-flying Cardiff following Ricardo Rocha’s first-half dismissal for an apparent headbutt on City striker Jay Bothroyd.

Corry Evans was on the winning side as Hull beat Doncaster to move to within two points of the play-off positions. Evans, who netted in last week’s win over Watford, was brought down inside the area to earn his side a first-half penalty during another accomplished performance.

Elsewhere, Danny Drinkwater featured in Watford’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Leeds, replacing the injured Ross Jenkins in the first-half at Elland Road. Malky Mackay’s side were on the brink of victory after Andreas Weimann’s 86th minute strike, until disaster struck when Troy Deeney bundled into his own goal just moments later to all but end Watford’s promotion hopes.

Over in Italy, Federico Macheda was not involved in Sampdoria’s 3-0 defeat to Serie A leaders AC Milan.
