Montpellier 1-2 OM: The opinion of ForOM

18/04/11 - Montpellier 1-2 OM

Invited to the programme ForOM, Manuel Amoros and Frédéric Meyrieu brought their experience and their opinions to the analysis of the match against Montpellier and the end of the season run-in.

Late on Sunday afternoon, after a dull first period with no momentum, no flashes of brilliance, the Olympians conceded a goal from Montpellier. This advantage on the scoreboard had the merit of waking up the Marseille players. In the heart of the Stade de la Mosson, they did not take long to, first of all, equalize and then take the upper hand.

From a brilliant opening by Benoît Cheyrou, André-Pierre Gignac brought the two sides level. Then from a foul on Remy by El-Kaoutari in the box, OM received a penalty. Despite the intimidation of the Montpellier players, the Nigerian defender did not tremble and sent Jourdren the wrong way, offering the three precious points of the victory to his team. "One wonders why OM did not take the initiative earlier in the game. When you play for the title, you have to go into matches differently. You have to lift the pace and show that you are the boss" says Manuel Amoros in ForOM. "Marseille fell into the false rhythm set by Montpellier, Frederic Meyrieu continues, but OM reacted after the goal with two exceptional gestures, the run from Gignac and the pass from Cheyrou."

Despite the victory, the observers regretted that OM only really played during the last twenty minutes. "Marseille played at the level of their opponents, some players should do a little more, if 4 or 5 players, say one per line, are at their best, the overall level of the team will also increase," said the former Metz player. "Since the beginning of the season, we’ve had trouble developing a decent style of play. We will be champions with a varying style," admits the former Olympian full back.

Manuel Amoros evokes the title because in the standings, OM pulled off the best result of Week 31 in the Ligue 1. The Olympians take advantage of Lille’s draw to pull back to within one point of the leaders, and the defeat to Lyon to put five points between themselves and Claude Puel's men. Lille have only taken one point from the last two matches against four for Marseille. The gap with seven games remaining, is very low. "Lille are not programmed to win the league, unlike us. Their defeat against Monaco and the statements of some players may have led to disturbances in the squad," affirms Manuel Amoros to explain Lille’s stagnation.
