Suvarnabhumi Airport dressed up for Songkran

BANGKOK, 8 April 2011 (NNT) – Suvarnabhumi International Airport has launched celebrative activities in conjunction with the upcoming Songkran Thai New Year Festival, 13-15 April, by decorating the terminal in festive atmosphere and holding cultural activities for passengers.

Suvarnabhumi Airport General Manager Flying Officer Anirut Thanomkulbutra on Thursday presided over the inauguration of the festivities to welcome both Thai and foreign passengers to the festival.

To impress both Thai and international tourists, the terminal has been re-decorated and festive activities have been prepared for tourists, during which they will be invited to pour lustral water on Buddha statues, and to decorate sand pagodas with small flags.

Flying Officer Anirut said over 1.5 million passengers are expected to arrive at Suvarnabhumi Airport during 9 - 18 April or about 150,000 people a day, increasing by 35%. Out of that total, 20% will be domestic passengers while 80% come from overseas.

The manager stressed that the airport during the festival would be lively despite the current serious flooding in the southern part of the kingdom as well as recent twin disasters in Japan.
