Argentina frustration for Villagra

Federico Villagra's bid to win 10 national titles has suffered another setback after he retired from round two of the Argentine Rally Championship last weekend.

Villagra is contesting his domestic series alongside his world championship campaign with the Munchi’s Ford World Rally Team this season.

On Rally de Villa Dolores in the province of Cordoba, Villagra was an early casualty when the engine in his Super 2000-based, Maxi Rally-class Ford Fiesta failed, forcing his retirement from the second Argentine championship event in succession.

FIA WRC Academy driver Miguel Baldoni was also in action on Rally de Villa Dolores held on the demanding roads of the Traslasierra Valley. Like Villagra, Baldoni failed to go the distance when a mechanical fault grounded his Volkswagen.

Ex-Production Car World Rally Championship competitor Claudio Menzi, driving a Fiat Punto MR, won the event after close challenger and former PWRC regular Gabriel Pozzo crashed his Volkswagen as he battled to recover a one-minute time penalty handed out on day one.

Villagra returns to WRC duty on Rally d’Italia Sardinia next month when he will get back behind the wheel of his Ford Fiesta RS WRC. After four rounds, the 41-year-old holds ninth in the drivers’ classification, while his Munchi’s team is sixth in the manufacturers’ table.
