MILAN - A photo exhibition dedicated entirely to the legendary captain of the Great Inter side of the sixties, Armando Picchi: an event not to be missed, held at the San Siro Museum from tomorrow, 3 May, until 16 May. It is the first in a series of initiatives organised in memory of an unforgettable player on the 40th anniversary of his death (27 May).
The photos come from the Picchi family's private collection and the F.C. Internazionale Milano archive. Some have been kindly provided by Nostalgica, a Milan-based shop selling retro football shirts and other memorabilia.
The pictures on display were chosen from a selection of 150 black-and-white images that will illustrate a book about the great man: Armando Picchi - Un nome già scritto Lassù (Armando Picchi - A name already written Up Above), published by IL FLABELLO and written by Pierluigi Arcidiacono, co-organiser of the exhibition with Serenella Calderara.
There are ten blow-ups:
- Picchi shaking hands with Real Madrid captain Gento, before the Nerazzurri's victory in the 1964 European Cup final
- Picchi raising the cup aloft with one hand, as he is carried triumphantly by his team-mates
- Arrival at the airport in Milan: an elegantly dressed Picchi once again raises the European Cup with one hand (this time his left) to show it to the fans. Alongside him is vice-president Peppino Prisco, smiling while seemingly devouring the cup with his eyes
- After the "Cup of Europe", as Picchi called it, came the Intercontinental Cup. Here the Great Inter captain proudly holds both trophies in a shot used for a football sticker
- At the airport he hugs the cup protectively, almost jealously, while next to him a smiling Helenio Herrera reaches out as if to touch it. In fact, il Mago (The Wizard) was waving to the fans who had come to the airport to greet the newly crowned champions of the world
- There are a few shots of Picchi in action on the pitch: against AC Milan, Juventus and two in the European Cup
- One of the rare images in existence of Picchi playing for Italy, which he represented twelve times
As well as the blow-ups, other photographs will be on display in their original format. Some, in frames, are from the lounge of his wife Francesca.
Besides the photographs, various items of memorabilia will be on display at the exhibition. Some of the more interesting pieces include: a small notebook containing Picchi's notes on the team's pre-season preparations ahead of the 1963/64 season; a bronze plaque given to Picchi by the club in 1967, in recognition of his success in Italy, Europe and the world with the Nerazzurri; a second bronze plaque, dedicated to the "Valoroso Capitano nerazzurro" (Courageous Nerazzurri Captain) and representing the Arco della Pace in Milan, also given to him by Inter, on 18 April 1971, on the occasion of the match in Turin against Juventus, of whom he was coach at the time, though he wasn't in the dugout that day because he had already fallen ill.
Also showcased during the event will be several shirts worn by the captain and a bust, which are part of the San Siro Museum's collection.
After these two weeks in Milan the exhibition will travel to Florence, where in June, enriched by further images mostly from his private life, it will be hosted by Villa Mimbelli in Livorno, the captain's birthplace.
The exhibition at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza will be open to the public from 10:00 to 18:00 (Via Piccolomini 5, entrance via gate 14. Tel. 0039 024042432 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 0039 024042432 end_of_the_skype_highlighting).
