Valencia, 24 June – The European Grand Prix, the eighth round of the Formula 1 World Championship got underway this morning with the first free practice session. Quickest on the street circuit that runs alongside the Spanish port was Mark Webber, the Australian taking his Red Bull round in 1.40.403. Behind him came Vitaly Petrov in the Renault (1.41.227) followed in third by the 150º Italia of Fernando Alonso (1.41.239.0 In the other Ferrari, Felipe Massa was sixth in 1.41.758, with Pirelli making on extra set of medium tyres available to all drivers. The 150º Italia is essentially unchanged from its Canadian weekend specification, apart from an update to the rear suspension on Fernando’s car. Both Ferrari men did three runs going through the usual programme, using just one set of tyres each on a track surface that is still very dirty, as expected on the first day of testing.

The second session starts at 2pm.
