Ferrari celebrates Paul Pietsch's 100th birthday
Stuttgart, 19 June 2011 – The Paul Pietsch Classic, a classic car event covering over 400 km through the Black Forest and the Rhein valley in southern Germany, came to a close in Stuttgart on Sunday the 19th of June.
The event was staged by Motor Presse, the editorial company that publishes the leading German automotive magazines, Auto Motor und Sport and Sport Auto, to commemorate the 100th birthday of the company’s founder, Paul Pietsch, the oldest surviving Formula One driver and the last surviving ex-works Auto Union driver.
All the major automotive manufacturers took part in the two-day event which featured 100 important classic cars. Ferrari participated with the 1954 750 Monza, a car that deeply impressed its guest driver, Scuderia Ferrari F1 test driver Marc Gené, at his first ever experience driving a classic car. “It really makes you respect how drivers raced in those days. You have to be physical with the car and there are no brakes!”
The event was characterised by heavy rain, which made the going very wet for passenger, Stefan Muller, the head of Ferrari Central and Eastern Europe. As the 750 Monza is a traditional sports-racer, it is in fact in racing configuration, with a windscreen only for the driver! The 750 Monza is one of the cars from the Ferrari Museum in Maranello, and is scrupulously maintained by Ferrari Classiche, the company’s in-house restoration and certification department. Joining the museum’s car at the event was a second Ferrari with full Classiche certification, a 1956 Boano-bodied 250 GT owned by collector, Professor Christian Gabka, who came second in his class in the regularity trial.
