Henrik Stenson carded an eight-under-par 64 to lead the way after the first round of the BMW International.

(CNN) -- Sweden's Henrik Stenson holds a one-shot lead after the opening round of the BMW International event in Munich, continuing the return to form he showed at last week's U.S. Open.

Former Ryder Cup player Stenson has slipped from fourth in the world to outside the top 130 in the last two years, but finished joint 23rd behind Rory McIlroy at the Congressional, after being up with the leaders for the first three rounds.

And he maintained that momentum on Thursday, carding an eight-under-par 64 to lead England's Gary Boyd by one stroke.

Stenson, who overcame some torrential rain to card an eagle and seven birdies, dropping just one shot along the way, told the official European Tour website: "I don't think you will find a player who has not had some rough times.

"We all go through ups and downs. I've been struggling with my game a little bit, but it's hard to put my finger on what it's been.

"I played a lot better last week. My confidence is still not as high as it can be, but I'm working away trying to do the things that are going to lead me back."

Boyd, joint runner-up in the Italian Open two weeks ago, carded eight birdies and would have tied for the lead but for a bogey six on the final hole.

Englishman Danny Willett and former British Open champion Paul Lawrie are another stroke back on 66, along with South African Jbe Kruger and Dutchman Tim Sluiter.

Twice U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen carded a four-under-par 68, while Sergio Garcia is among those players on 69.
