OUR CHAUFFEURS: THE AMG DRIVING ACADEMY

OTHER TEAM NEWS // 21.07.2011

In 1934, the legend of the Silver Arrows was born at the Nürburgring. Twenty years later, a Formula One Silver Arrow contested a Grand Prix on this iconic circuit for the (so far) one and only time. The current season now sees a 100-percent Mercedes-Benz factory team racing at the Nürburgring for the first time since 1954 – MERCEDES GP PETRONAS.

On Thursday, a number special guests and journalists were able to experience the Nordschleife from the cockpit of a Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG.

Among the taxi drivers for the 20km drive through the 'Green Hell' were former DTM star and F1 safety car driver Bernd Mayländer, and racing driver Markus Winkelhock, who led for part of the 2007 European Grand Prix on the new track, along with several other highly qualified instructors from AMG Performance Driving Events.

Since 2007, the AMG Driving Academy has been synonymous with driving pleasure, road safety and a passion for motoring. The programme offers a wide selection of events which allow ambitious sports car enthusiasts to improve their car control and further enhance their driving safety.

Five different programmes offer everything from lifestyle-oriented events and courses which take the participants through their first experience of driving at the limit, all the way through to intensive race circuit training with a competitive edge. The level of difficulty is tailored to the participants’ individual requirements. Depending on the type of event, the participants drive either their own AMG cars or AMG high-performance models laid on by the AMG Driving Academy.

Safety pioneer Mercedes-Benz has a long tradition of providing such training: as early as 1902, the sons of Gottlieb Daimler were conducting driving lessons at the works of the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft.

Leading the courses are more than 20 licensed and race-proven instructors, all keen to share their extensive knowledge and impart new skills. The team under Head Instructor Reinhold Renger includes some famous names such as Mercedes-Benz DTM star Susie Stoddart, DTM record championship winner Bernd Schneider, Bernd Mayländer and professional racing drivers Thomas Jäger and Chris Mamerow.
