Ferrari boss promises innovation for 2012

Wednesday 24th August 2011

Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali has promised innovation for next year's Formula One world title challenge.

Ferrari are already well advanced when it comes to their car for 2012, although that is not to say they have yet given up on this season's championship.

Following a three-week break from racing, and in particular a two-week factory shutdown, the team is now full steam ahead going into this weekend's 's return with the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa.

"Everyone seems to be like me, very motivated with batteries fully charged for the rest of the season," said Domenicali.

"We share the same state of mind - ready to return to the race tracks."

But when it comes to what can be achieved this season, with Ferrari 168 points adrift of Red Bull in the constructors' championship and Fernando Alonso 89 behind Sebastian Vettel in the drivers', it has very much become a case of hope and see.

"Our realistic goal for the remaining eight grands prix is to win races, to score as many points as possible," added Domenicali.

"I am sure we can achieve good results, but we should avoid looking at the classification.

"We know the championship will be very difficult given the current gap, but let's see where it is in a few races.

"We have the potential to do well and we have to believe in ourselves."

Domenicali concedes that development of this season's car, the 150 Italia, is "almost at the end of the road", albeit not yet at "a complete halt".

Next year, though, is looming ever larger into focus as he said: "As of now, we are working full throttle on the 2012 car.

"As far as next year's regulations are concerned, apart from rules regarding the exhaust system, there are not many changes, therefore the new cars can be described as a development of the 2011 car.

"However, what I can say, having seen the model in the wind tunnel and the work going on in the drawing office, is that it will be a very innovative machine.

"In fact, this is to be expected and necessary given our first goal is that, in 2012, we must be competitive right from the very start of the season."
