Formula One Fantasy - Virgin’s Timo Glock
Driving for young upstarts Virgin at the blunt end of the grid, Timo Glock doesn’t have one of the easiest roles in Formula One racing, with 14th at last year’s Japanese Grand Prix his highest finish after almost two years with the team. A spot of daydreaming about his Formula One fantasies must be a bit of light relief for the 29 year-old German. We caught up with Glock to find out why driving a steel-braked McLaren MP4-4 on a San Jose street circuit followed by a steak dinner with Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher, Robert Kubica and Jarno Trulli would top his wish list…
Q: You must choose a city for a new Formula One street circuit - which city, anywhere in the world, do you choose, and why?
Timo Glock: Los Angeles. Because it is one of the big hot spots and you could probably mingle with the Hollywood crowd.
Q: If you could choose one former world champion as your team mate, who would you choose and why?
TG: Michael Schumacher because he is one of the most competitive racers out there.Q: Formula One innovations of the past - ground effect, active suspension, turbocharging, six wheels, the list goes on. If you could bring back one past innovation, what would it be and why?
TG: I would go for more weight and steel brakes for better overtaking.
Q: What innovations would you like to see in the future?TG: Less rule changes!
Q: You can only drive at one circuit for the rest of your life - which circuit, past or present from anywhere in the world, do you choose?
TG: Singapore. I simply love that track and, of course, its special atmosphere - the lights, the people in a special mood - it’s fantastic!
Q: Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Tyrrell, March are just some of the teams that have departed the sport. Which former team would you most liked to have raced with and why?
TG: Tyrrell, because of its great history.
Q: You have to design a new F1 circuit, combining all your favorite corners from other tracks around the world. Which three corners are top of your list and why?
TG: Eau Rouge from Spa, the Laguna Seca corkscrew, and the Suzuka esses.
Q: You can travel back in time and compete in any decade of Formula One racing, from the 1950s to the 1990s. Which decade would you choose and why?
TG: The 1990s because of the great cars they drove.
Q: What current Formula One regulation would you most like to change and why?
TG: I would ban KERS again because of the costs.Q: If you could pick two Formula One greats of the past (from different eras) to watch race against each other, whom would you pick?
TG: It’s no big surprise - Ayrton Senna and Juan Manuel Fangio.
Q: If you were a team boss, which current driver would you pick first for your team (excluding yourself and your current team mate)?TG: Fernando Alonso.
Q: Just 19 of the world’s motor racing circuits feature on the current F1 calendar. You can add one more. Which circuit do you pick and why?
TG: The street circuit in San Jose, USA because it’s one of the hardest tracks that I have ever driven.
Q: You are having a dinner party and can invite four people from the world of motorsport, past or present. Who do you invite?
TG: Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher, Robert Kubica and Jarno Trulli - because he would bring some good wine!
Q: You are given the chance to drive any legendary Formula One car of the past (excluding those made by your own team). Which car would you choose?TG: The McLaren from 1988.
Q: Rooftop swimming pool, bowling alley, revolving sushi bar - just some of the features most F1 motorhomes don’t possess. If you could add one thing to your team’s motorhome, what would it be?
TG: Definitely a swimming pool.
Q: Imagine you have just won the world title. Where would you go for your celebratory meal and what would choose from the menu?
TG: Somewhere I can have a great steak!
