After Friday had dawned hot, humid and sunny, normal Spa-Francorchamps weather soon put in an appearance during the first free practice session for Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix.
The session started in the dry, but of course not many cars ventured out on track in the early moments and by the time everyone was thinking about tackling the 7 kilometre track, the rain arrived with a vengeance. It gradually eased off, but the surface remained damp through to the end of the 90 minutes, which were interrupted by a red flag with around 15 minutes remaining, when Di Resta went off in his Force India. Jaime Alguersuari was the best of the Toro Rossos, completing 16 laps on his way to ninth place, with Sébastien Buemi setting the fourteenth fastest time, doing 14 laps. Michael Schumacher topped the time sheet, with a lap six seconds short of the two minute mark, followed by his Mercedes team-mate, Nico Rosberg. Jenson Button was fourth for McLaren, followed by Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull. Lewis Hamilton was fifth in the other McLaren, with Adrian Sutil sixth for Force India.
