Risi cruelly denied Laguna Seca podium
Maranello, 18 September – There was a very disappointing finish to the Laguna Seca 6-Hour race, the penultimate round of the 2011 American Le Mans Series. In the punishing endurance race the 458 Italian GT2 run by the Risi Competizione team put in a fine drive through the field to reach the lead of the GT class and to stay in front for 74 of the 236 laps. But in the course of the very last lap, the team of Jaime Melo and Toni Vilander were forced to let their opponents past in order to save fuel. They still finished the race with a third place that, despite the initial frustration, would have at least secured important points for the title race. But then an unexpected post-race penalty for ‘avoidable contact’ with the Porsche run by the Flying Lizard team saw the Ferrari moved back to sixth place, destroying the team’s hopes after a race in which they had been among the main players.
The next round of the prestigious championship is scheduled for the Road Atlanta circuit with the historic 1000-mile race Petit Le Mans. The race will be the 14th round of the ALMS championship and will also count towards the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup.
