REVIEW OF THE MERCEDES-BENZ RACE WEEKEND

OTHER TEAM NEWS // 19.09.2011

Last Sunday, while the MERCEDES GP PETRONAS team (including drivers Nico and Michael) were making preparations for the Singapore Grand Prix next weekend, the Mercedes-Benz DTM teams were competing at Oschersleben where they once again had to battle the weather on Sunday afternoon.

In a difficult race held in wet conditions, Gary Paffett was the best of the C-Class drivers, finishing in fourth place. His result is all the more impressive because of the way Gary climbed 14 positions through the field. Meanwhile, Christian Vietoris also produced a stunning comeback – the Junge Sterne AMG Mercedes driver finished fifth from a P17 start to clinch his first DTM championship points. Maro Engel was also scored points, crossing the line in seventh position.

Bruno Spengler was on course to regain the championship lead, running in a strong second place, when lost time with a mechanical failure, and was eventually forced to retire. In the drivers’ standings, Spengler is now nine points behind leader Martin Tomczyk (Audi) with two races to go.

“Bruno was in second place and set to retake the lead in the title race,” says Vice-President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport Norbert Haug, “but he was stopped by a mechanical failure at the front of his car which we are still investigating. Now we have a nine-point gap to close at Valencia and Hockenheim.”

GT Masters: Two podium finishes in Assen

Last weekend, Assen was the venue for two rounds of the ADAC GT Masters. A total of nine Mercedes-Benz AMG SLS GT3s lined up at the start.

In the first race on Saturday, three gullwings finished in the Top Ten. Best of the SLS AMG GT3 drivers were Dominik Baumann and Harald Proczyk who finished fourth.

The second race on Sunday saw no fewer than two gullwings on the podium: Baumann and Proczyk of Heico Motorsport in second place, Andreas Zuber and Lance David Arnold in third. A total of four SLS AMG GT3s finished in the Top Ten.
