VETTEL’S VICTORY IN ITALY IS A DREAM COME TRUE
Sep 11, 2011
It was an emotional Sebastian Vettel who took the podium and the winner’s trophy at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, having repeated his 2008 feat with margin to spare.
It was less of a celebration for Mark whose lap four collision with Felipe Massa effectively ended his race when he was unable to make it back to the pits to change a damaged nose.
But, significantly, it was the first DNF from either of our boys this season.
And that’s no mean feat when you watch the re-play of Tonio Liuzzi sailing sideways through the pack removing (several) competitors who can’t have known what hit them. Some things you just cannot control. Just ask Rosberg and Petrov.
So, while not one for the album for Mark, for Vettel it was another great day in this park; a unique venue for the German driver: “This circuit means such a lot to me and is very special,” said Sebastian. “It has been tough for us here for the last two years and so, to come back this year and win..!”
Myopic critics who still maintain he can’t overtake will have to ignore his brilliant move on Alonso on lap 5 at the Curva Grande if they want to continue their argument. And, after that pass, it was two efficient pit stops and another 48 laps to establish a near ten-second advantage over Button who had won the second step battle with Alonso.
While every grand prix win is special and reward for the work and time the team invests, this one, for Christian Horner was of particular note.
He said: “A phenomenal race today. To win in Monza is a dream come true and it was a really dominant performance by Sebastian. Unfortunately Mark’s race came to a premature end, but I’m sure he will bounce back in Singapore.”
Picking up the Constructors’ trophy for us on the podium this afternoon was Stefano Sordo, our Aero Performance Group Leader. Afterwards Christian paid tribute to another member of the wider Red Bull Racing family. He said: “Sadly, we lost a team member earlier in the week, Erin Pezzella, a young lady who has been with the team for four years. She lost a very brave fight against cancer and we would like to dedicate this result in her memory today.”
Don’t forget they’ll be more on the team podcast which will be live on iTunes and www.redbullracing.com tomorrow.
