GP2 test for JK Racing Asia champion

Wed 21 Sep, 2011

Caterham Team AirAsia will give a prize GP2 test to the winner of the 2011 JK Racing Asia Series.

The championship uses former Formula BMW cars and supports the Formula 1 grands prix in Malaysia, Singapore and India. It is also supported by Team Lotus reserve driver Karun Chandhok.

Its winner will join the Team Lotus sister team, Caterham Team AirAsia, at one of the official GP2 2012 pre-season tests. The team finished sixth in its first season in GP2 this year, taking its maiden victory in Monaco.

Team Lotus Team Principal Tony Fernandes said: "At AirAsia we believe in making dreams a reality, and our extensive involvement in motorsports, from our Driver Development Programme with Team Lotus, and Team Lotus itself, allows us to continually be a part of the growth of our youth as they pursue their future. To be able to offer this unique and exciting prize to the champion of the JK Racing Asia Series is an absolute pleasure, and we look forward to catching some of the upcoming races in Singapore and India."

David Sonenscher, CEO of Motorsport Asia which organises the JK Racing series, said: "I am very happy to be able to announce this award which comes about through our collaboration with AirAsia. This will be a great opportunity for one of the young aspiring future Formula 1 stars, currently racing in our JK Racing Asia Series. The whole purpose of the JK Racing Asia Series is to provide a platform to develop young talent out of karting and towards their goal of Formula 1.

"A test with one of the leading GP2 teams, which is just one step from Formula 1, will not only provide further motivation for them to secure the JK Racing Asia title, but will also give them an opportunity to understand what will be expected from them in their future careers. I am very grateful to Tony Fernandes for putting this together as an added bonus to AirAsia's involvement in the JK Racing Asia Series."
