Air traffic control strikes across Italy caused our motorhome staff a few anxious moments on Tuesday. As their plane sat motionless on the runway in London for several hours, they had visions of the mechanics buying sarnies from the paddock café the following day. Luckily, the plane eventually took off and the guys landed in Milan at 0100 Wednesday morning – plenty of time for them to prepare breakfast!

Another person affected by delays was Jenson Button. The 2009 World Champion thought he’d pay Pirelli’s HQ in Milan a visit this morning, before heading to Monza at lunchtime. He got to Pirelli okay, but the 30-minute drive to the Autodromo ended up taking three hours. “It was unbelievable,” said Jenson. “We’d been driving for about an hour when I suddenly realised we were back where we started!”

Jenson then headed back into Milan this evening for the official opening of McLaren Automotive’s new showroom, ‘McLaren Milano’. Let’s hope he made it back to his motorhome before midnight!

Pirelli got all artistic this afternoon when it enlisted the help of renowned F1 artist Mark Dickens to produce a painting. Dickens ‘inked’ some of Pirelli’s wet and intermediate tyres and used them as rollers on a giant canvass in the F1 paddock. Five drivers, including AT&T Williams star Rubens Barrichello, hand-rolled the tyres over the canvass and the finished product will be presented to the town of Monza by F1 commercial boss Bernie Ecclestone.
