Exceptional, unique Italy: Ferraris take to the Grand Canal

The most beautiful Ferraris ever built paraded across the Venice Lagoon on three huge barges. A real world first and a truly once-off spectacle.

The thousands of tourists thronging Venice on a warm, summery Friday last week must have marvelled at the sight of some of the most famous and beautiful Ferraris ever built parading down the Grand Canal. Only in extraordinary Italy, they must have thought.
But before we go any further, let us just make it clear that the Ferraris in question were being ferried on three large barges. The exotically eastern decoration of the palazzos and the pure lines of the Maranello cars proved an entirely new and fascinatingly harmonious combination. The cars taking part in the special Italia Classica Ferrari event included several 1960s Californias, several sports prototypes, including the 750 Monza and the 375 Plus, the Daytona Spider and a host of other truly outstanding models.

Getting back to those mostly-foreign tourists, that wonderful spectacle must have conjured up that very special emotion we feel when we’re out and about in a world that recognises in Italy a uniqueness and fascination other nations just don’t have. We have art and culture, glorious food and wine and beautiful countryside. We also have a sense of beauty that translates into superb fashion, design, good taste and, on top of all that, car constructors as peerless as Ferrari.
Which leads to another observation: with all that, doesn’t Italy have what it takes to become the world’s richest and most serene nation?
