PARLEZ-VOUS FRANCAIS?

Oct 13, 2011

Sitting in our office, looking at the sun rippling across the water in a bay surrounded by mountains, the Yeongam circuit is looking particularly lovely today, or at least that’s the view from our huge offices at the back of the Korea International Circuit.

And what’s that we hear wafting through the partition walls from other areas of the team building? Is it people speaking Korean? Actually no, it’s the sound of the cockerel, le bleu blanc rouge, l’Hexagone, or any other allusion to France you care to mention. We’ve got used to hearing a bit of it from Swiss Sebastien, but this weekend we have Jean-Eric Vergne, or 'Jev' to use his nickname, driving for us tomorrow morning. The French press have invaded us, keen to have something patriotic to write about.

The Spanish are also here of course, looking for a story in the fact that Alguersuari is sitting out FP1, to make way for the Frenchman, but Jaime is very relaxed about having 90 minutes less of track action this weekend. “I’m cool with it,” he said. “In any case, the forecast says it might rain tomorrow and then be dry for the rest of the weekend, for the race and for Saturday. So it’s not a problem, as I know the track from last year.”

The local town of Mokpo continues to amaze with its strange ways. As Vergne was driving here at the start of the week, he could not believe his eyes when a car with flashing headlights came towards the oncoming traffic on the wrong side of the road. Everyone dutifully moved over and the reason for this unusual procedure soon became clear, as a huge part of a tanker ship sailed up the road on the back of several massive trucks, occupying both sides of the freeway. Mokpo is a major port and shipbuilding is thriving in Korea, but imagine the car insurance claim form when you have to fill it in saying you crashed avoiding a ship cruising down the road!
