Abu Dhabi GP - Alonso gets the missing trophy
Yas Marina, 13 November – Ferrari secured its tenth podium finish of the season thanks to a fantastic second place finish in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix from Fernando Alonso. His team-mate Felipe Massa added to the points total, by coming home fifth in the other 150º Italia. Next to Fernando on the podium were the two McLaren drivers, Lewis Hamilton taking his third win of the season, with Jenson Button third. Before the weekend, Fernando revealed he had a podium trophy from all the races on the calendar with the exception of this one, so in what has been a tough season, at least one personal goal has been achieved!
Shortly after the start, pole man Vettel picked up a puncture on his right rear, sending him spinning over a kerb, which damaged his Red Bull to the extent he had to retire in the pits, leaving Hamilton leading from Button and Fernando, the Ferrari man having got ahead of Webber at the start, then, still on the opening lap the Spaniard had moved up to second muscling past Button at the end of the back straight, with Webber fourth and Felipe fifth. Perez pitted the Sauber for a new nose on lap 2 and the order on lap 3 was Hamilton, 2.8 ahead of Fernando, who had Button 2.3 behind him, then came Webber in the remaining Red Bull, 0.6 ahead of Felipe in fifth. Next came the Mercedes duo of Rosberg and Schumacher.
The gaps at the front gradually extended, so that on lap 8, Hamilton was 2.7 in front of Alonso, who led Button by 3.3, while the Englishman was now 1.4 ahead of Webber, who had 2.0 in hand over Felipe. The Brazilian was having a solitary race as sixth placed Rosberg was 3.6 down. One lap later, the Button-Webber battle hotted up as twice they traded places, with the Englishman getting the better of the Australian after a couple of corners.
Felipe was the first of the front runners to change tyres on lap 15. Then on 16, the two leaders came in together, with no change to the order as Hamilton led Fernando back out onto the track. McLaren did a double pit stop bringing Button in immediately behind his team-mate. Sutil and Schumacher also pitted on this lap. Temporary leader Webber had a slow stop on lap 17, with Rosberg also changing tyres on this lap. With all the leaders having stopped once, the order was Hamilton, 3.6 ahead of Fernando, who now had Button 13 behind him, with Felipe fourth, thanks to the Red Bull’s slow tyre change, 1.4 behind the McLaren and 5.0 ahead of Webber.
The sun set as the race reached half distance and on lap 27, the lead positions remained unchanged, with Fernando 3.3 behind leader Hamilton, while Button had drifted to 15 seconds off the Spaniard. In fourth, Massa was now slightly closer to the McLaren, 1.2 behind, but the Brazilian now had Webber just 0.9 behind him. The two men continued to battle it out, with some hot moments as they fought their way past backmarkers. Webber then made his second stop on lap 35, followed one lap later by third placed Button, so that Felipe was now third, albeit 26 seconds behind his team-mate, while Rosberg was now fourth ahead of Button and Webber. On lap 40 of 55, Hamilton made his final tyre change, with Felipe also coming in at this point, slowed on his way out of the underground pit lane exit by a Lotus. Fernando now led but needed to make one more pit stop, with Hamilton, running to the finish, almost 20 seconds down. After his final stop, Felipe was struggling slightly on the harder tyres and was now sixth behind the duel of the race between Button and Webber, which saw the Red Bull again get ahead of the McLaren on lap 42. Rosberg at this point was third. Alonso came in on lap 43, unfortunately behind a slower car and emerged in second spot, 4.4 behind Hamilton. Lap 45 and Webber took Rosberg for third, the Mercedes driver still showing no signs of making a second stop.
In the final ten laps, Webber was the fastest man on track and he was reducing the gap to Fernando in big chunks. On lap 47 it was down to 14.3, while behind him, Rosberg finally made his second stop, which meant Felipe, who had just survived a giant slide, moved up to fifth. However, the Australian was no real threat to Fernando, because Red Bull had switched him to a three stopper to give him more pace for longer on the softer tyres, which meant he had to come in on the very last of the 55 laps to conform to the rules, by running both types of tyre so that he ended the race fourth behind the podium trio and ahead of Felipe. The remaining points went to the Mercedes duo of Rosberg and Schumacher, sixth and seventh and then came Sutil and Di Resta for Force India with the final point going to Kobayashi in the Sauber. The season ends in two weeks time in Felipe’s home town of Sao Paolo at the Brazilian GP. He will want to finish on a high while Fernando will have one last chance to take second in the Drivers’ classification: he is currently third, ten points behind second placed Button.

Yas Marina, 13 novembre – La Ferrari si è assicurata il suo decimo podio stagionale, grazie al fantastico secondo posto conquistato da Fernando Alonso nel Gran Premio di Abu Dhabi. Il suo compagno di squadra, Felipe Massa, ha aggiunto punti al totale, arrivando quinto con l’altra Ferrari 150° Italia. Sul podio, accanto a Fernando, i due piloti della McLaren, Lewis Hamilton, che ha conquistato la sua terza vittoria stagionale, e Jenson Button, terzo. Prima di questo fine settimana, Fernando aveva rivelato di aver conquistato un podio in tutte le gare in calendario ad eccezione di questa, così in quella che è stata una stagione difficile, almeno un obiettivo personale è stato raggiunto!
Poco dopo la partenza, l’uomo della pole, Vettel, ha subito una foratura alla sua posteriore destra, che lo ha fatto girare sul cordolo, danneggiando a tal punto la sua Red Bull che è stato costretto a ritirarsi ai box, lasciando Hamilton leader della corsa su Button e Fernando, con il pilota della Ferrari che si è portato davanti a Webber alla partenza e poi, sempre al primo giro, il pilota spagnolo si è portato fino in seconda posizione passando di forza Button alla fine del rettilineo, con Webber quarto e Felipe quinto. Perez ha effettuato un pit stop con la Sauber per montare un musetto nuovo al secondo giro e l'ordine, al giro numero 3, era Hamilton, 2,8 secondi davanti a Fernando, che aveva Button a 2,3 secondi di distacco, poi Webber con la restante Red Bull, a 0,6 secondi davanti a Felipe che era al quinto posto. Poi, il duo Mercedes composto da Rosberg e Schumacher.
I distacchi nella parte alta della classifica si sono progressivamente ampliati, così che al giro 8, Hamilton si trovava a 2,7 secondi davanti ad Alonso, che comandava su Button a 3,3, mentre l'inglese era ormai a 1,4 secondi davanti a Webber, che poteva contare su oltre 2 secondi di distacco da Felipe. Il brasiliano ha fatto una corsa solitaria, con il sesto posto di Rosberg che era staccato di 3,6 secondi. Un giro più tardi, la battaglia tra Button e Webber è entrata nel vivo con un doppio scambio di posizioni finito poi con l'inglese che ha avuto la meglio sull'australiano dopo un paio di curve.
Felipe è stato il primo dei piloti di testa a cambiare le gomme al 15° giro. Poi al giro 16, i due piloti di testa sono rientrati insieme, senza modificare l'ordine della classifica, con Hamilton rientrato in pista davanti a Fernando. La McLaren ha effettuato un doppio pit stop con Button subito dietro il suo compagno di squadra. Anche Sutil e Schumacher si sono fermati in questo giro. Webber, che era leader temporaneo della gara, ha effettuato una sosta lenta al 17° giro, con Rosberg che ha cambiato anche lui gli pneumatici in questo stesso giro. Con tutti i primi che si erano fermati una volta ai box, l'ordine adesso era Hamilton, a 3,6 secondi da Fernando, che ora aveva Button a 13 secondi dietro, con Felipe quarto, grazie al cambio gomme che ha rallentato la Red Bull, a 1,4 dalla McLaren e a 5 secondi di vantaggio da Webber.
Il sole è tramontato quando si era a metà gara e, al giro 27, le posizioni dei primi sono rimaste invariate, con Fernando a 3,3 secondi dal leader Hamilton, mentre Button era molto distaccato, a 15 secondi dal pilota spagnolo. Al quarto posto, Massa era un po' più vicino alla McLaren, dietro a 1,2 secondi, ma il brasiliano ora aveva Webber a soli 0,9 secondi da lui. I due piloti hanno continuato a sfidarsi, con alcuni momenti caldi, come quando hanno dovuto superare alcuni doppiati. Webber ha poi effettuato la sua seconda sosta al giro 35, seguito un giro dopo da Button, terzo, così che Felipe adesso si trovava lui in terza posizione, anche se a 26 secondi dal suo compagno di squadra, mentre Rosberg era quarto davanti a Button e Webber. Al 40° dei 55 giri previsti, Hamilton ha effettuato il suo ultimo cambio degli pneumatici, seguito subito dopo da Felipe, ,rallentato nella corsia dei box sotterranei da una Lotus. Fernando ora era in testa, ma con la necessità di fermarsi per un altro pit stop, con Hamilton, che correva sul traguardo a quasi 20 secondi. Dopo la sua ultima sosta, Felipe ha avuto un po’ di difficoltà con le gomme più dure e ora era sesto dietro al duello tra Button e Webber, che ha visto la Red Bull ancora una volta prevalere sulla McLaren al giro 42. Rosberg a questo punto era terzo. Alonso è rientrato al 43° giro, purtroppo dietro una macchina più lenta, ed è rientrato al secondo posto, a 4,4 secondi da Hamilton. Giro numero 45 e Webber ha preso Rosberg al terzo posto, con il pilota Mercedes che non mostrava ancora alcun segnale di voler fermarsi per la seconda sosta.
Negli ultimi dieci giri, Webber è stato il più veloce in pista, riducendo sensibilmente il divario da Fernando. Al 47° giro è arrivato fino a 14,3, mentre dietro di lui, Rosberg alla fine ha effettuato la sua seconda sosta, il che significava che Felipe, che si era appena salvato da una forte sbandata, è salito al quinto posto. Tuttavia, l'australiano non costituiva una minaccia reale per Fernando, perché la Red Bull ha impostato la strategia sui tre pit stop per dargli un ritmo alto più a lungo con le gomme morbide, ma ciò lo ha costretto a rientrare all’ultimo dei 55 giri per conformarsi alle regole, che prevedono l’utilizzo di entrambi i tipi di pneumatici, così ha chiuso la gara al quarto posto alle spalle del trio sul podio e davanti a Felipe. I restanti punti sono andati al duo Mercedes composto da Rosberg e Schumacher, sesto e settimo, e poi Sutil e Di Resta per la Force India, con il punto finale che è andato a Kobayashi in Sauber. La stagione si conclude tra due settimane a San Paolo, città natale di Felipe, con il GP del Brasile. Vorrà finire la stagione con un buon risultato, mentre Fernando avrà un'ultima possibilità di ottenere la seconda posizione nella classifica Piloti: attualmente è terzo, a dieci punti da Button, secondo.
