ABU DHABI YOUNG DRIVER TEST: DAY THREE

by www.redbullracing.com, Nov 17, 2011

Red Bull Junior driver Jean-Eric Vergne was back behind the wheel of an RB7 for a third time today for the final day of the Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi.

Aboard the RB7, Jean-Eric maintained his lead, topping the timesheets with a fastest lap time of 1:38.917 after 46 laps of the track.

It was the hottest day of the test so far, with air temperatures reaching 33˚C and track temperatures creeping up to 55˚C. The team’s morning test programme went to plan, but the afternoon was interrupted by a number of reliability issues, which prevented the team from fully completing its planned tyre test.

Head of Race Engineering Ian Morgan said: “It was a frustrating day, due to a few niggly reliability issues which hampered our progress in the afternoon – but we had a good morning. Looking to Jean-Eric, I must say I have been very impressed with him during this test. He’s not really been in our car for any length of time before this week and he hasn’t made a single mistake. He’s good at taking in information and using it as required and he’s been consistent and controlled. He was able to do as we ask and put in a lap time whenever we needed – he’s done a good job.”

The final results looked like this:

1. Jean-Eric Vergne (Red Bull Racing) 1:38.917s
2. Sam Bird (Mercedes GP) 1:40.897s
3. Jules Bianchi (Ferrari) 1:41.347s
4. Oliver Turvey (McLaren) 1:41.513s
5. Max Chilton (Force India) 1:41.575s
6. Esteban Gutierrez (Sauber) 1:42.049s
7. Mirko Bortolotti (Williams) 1:43.277s
8. Kevin Ceccon (Toro Rosso) 1:43.686s
9. Alexander Rossi (Lotus) 1:44.283s
10. Jan Charouz (HRT) 1:44.470s
11. Stefano Coletti (Toro Rosso) 1:44.545s
12. Nathanael Berthon (HRT) 1:45.839s
13. Robert Wickens (Virgin) 1:45.934s
14. Charles Pic (Virgin) 1:46.348s

The team will be in action again next week in Sao Paulo for the Brazilian Grand Prix, the final race of the 2011 season. Track activity starts on Friday 25 November.
