iWitness in Abu Dhabi: Friday

Things change quickly on the AT&T Williams race team. Data engineer Andy Harman has turned up in Abu Dhabi sporting a different look: gone is his long blond hair, replaced by a Mohican. And Scott Williams, our bodywork technician, can barely wipe the smile off his face, having proposed to his girlfriend last weekend. Congratulations!

“Daddy, will you be home in time for Christmas?” It was a question posed by Flora McCullough, daughter of race engineer Tom, after it was explained that he wouldn’t be coming home for a while. Quite a while in fact. The AT&T Williams race team is in the middle of a two-week stint at Yas Marina because they have the young driver test at the circuit next week and the guys then fly straight to Sao Paulo next weekend. But don’t worry, Flora, dad will be home long before Christmas!

With such an arduous schedule on the cards, sleep is going to be vital for everyone, and that’s what could be lacking at Yas Marina. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend is party central and opposite the team’s hotel is the Sky Bar, where live music is being played until 4am every morning. Don’t forget your earplugs, guys!

There was relief for baseball fan Pastor Maldonado this evening when news came through from Venezuela that Wilson Ramos, one of the country’s top ‘catchers’, has been located by police after being kidnapped. He can now return to Washington to continue his career with the Nationals. “Good news!” said Pastor.

A big shout out to Lord Coe, an old friend of Frank Williams going back to the days when they were both sponsored by ICI. Seb’s landed the 2017 World Athletics Championships for London, ensuring the Olympic Stadium will continue to host world-class events long after the 2012 Olympic fever has passed. Brilliant news.
