Cayman bites harder

Porsche smallest coupe gets more power and a stricter diet

- Porsche took the wraps off the third model in the Cayman lineup earlier this week at the Los Angeles auto show. Dubbed Cayman R, it will join the Cayman S and regular Cayman in showrooms early next year.

Cayman R produces 325hp.

- The 3.4-litre flat-six engine in the Cayman S has been tuned from 315hp up to 325 for the Cayman R. This reflects a similar strategy used in the Boxster open-top variation, although the outputs are slightly different. The Boxster Spyder produces 320hp _ 5hp less than the Cayman R.

- Porsche has given the Cayman R some lightweight treatment by omitting the stereo and air-conditioning system inside and installing carbonfibre seats and lighter door panels. As a result, the Cayman R at under 1.3 tonnes weighs 55kg less _ just like the Boxster Spyder.

- Coming as standard in the Cayman R is a limited-slip differential and lowered suspension by 20mm. There's also a fixed rear spoiler and special paint schemes to differentiate it from the other Caymans.

- The Cayman R goes from 0-100kph in 5.0sec _ 2.0sec faster than in the Cayman S. Armed with a seven-speed PDK automatic and Sport Chrono package, the time is cut down to 4.7sec. With similar transmission and electronic gadgets, the Boxster Spyder does it in 4.8sec.
