Sky Deutschland has announced it will televise Formula One in true high definition in 2011 as the sport looks set to up the standard of its world feed.
The news will benefit Sky's subscribing viewers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and raise the hopes of fans in other countries that their host broadcasters will follow suit.
"This agreement is a late Christmas gift to our customers," said Sky's sports chief Carsten Schmidt.
If Sky is able to offer true HD to its customers with HD-ready TVs and set-top boxes, it should also be possible for other broadcasters to do the same. Formula One Management experimented with HD and 3D cameras in 2010 but did not broadcast the results to the fans.
British broadcaster the BBC said earlier this week: "Further details about BBC plans for 2011 will be released in due course."
