- BMW has introduced a new inline-four petrol-turbo engine deemed crucial for the future. It premieres in the X1 xDrive28i with 245hp. There will be lower outputs that will also stretch to other mainstream models.

- The Panamera four-door fastback becomes the second road-going Porsche to go hybrid. The Panamera S Hybrid gets the same 380hp 3.0-litre supercharged V6 petrol/electric and eight-speed automatic transmission from the Cayenne S Hybrid SUV.

- Land Rover and Volvo are showcasing plug-in hybrid technologies set to reach showrooms next year in existing models. The Rangee combines electric propulsion with the existing 3.0-litre V6 diesel-turbo, while the V60 Plug-in Hybrid mates electricity with a 2.4-litre inline-five diesel-turbo. Their respective EV ranges are 30km and 50km.

- A number of brands have added go-faster version of existing models. The Aston Martin Vantage S gets a 16hp boost to 436hp), Jaguar XKR-S (40hp to 550hp), Maserati GranCabrio Sport (10hp to 450hp) and Mini Cooper SD (31hp to 143hp).

- Two makers have unveiled new body derivatives of existing models: Hyundai i40 Tourer and Saab 9-5 Wagon. Both estates are unlikely to come to Thai shores. But three others stand a chance: the two-door version of Mercedes-Benz's mid-sized car range called C-class Coupe{aac}, seven-seat MPV variant of the Toyota Prius carrying the + moniker and the classic cabriolet 2+2 of the Volkswagen Golf.

- Kia has made an unusual appearance by debuting all-new A- and B-segment cars at the same time. The Picanto and Rio hatchbacks come with new-age styling and downsized motors. Chances of their Thai sales hinge on the brand's Afta production strategy.
