The Airports of Thailand (AoT) plans to utilise two thirds of Don Muang International Airport for six new businesses.

Operation of domestic airlines in Don Muang International Airport will be moved to international terminal 1 in June to leave a space for the AoT’s new projects.

All domestic passengers will be moved to the existing international terminal 1 on June 1.

Wing Commander Prateep Wichitto, AoT general manager for Don Muang International Airport, said in an interview that the AoT has set aside a budget of 13million baht to refurbish terminal 1 to support the move.

"The budget is not high because there's nothing much to be fixed," he said, adding that international terminal 1 is still in operation for international passengers of charter flights and private jets. Most of the budget will be allocated to interior decoration.

At present only two domestic airlines _ Nok Air and Orient Thai _ offer services at the domestic terminal.

The facility will be segmented into two parts: one for international irregular flights and the other for the two domestic airlines.

"There have been no requests from other airlines to move their services to Don Muang yet," Prateep added.

After moving, other areas of the airport starting from international terminal 2 and cargo areas will be redesigned.

The AoT plans to develop six new projects to boost its income from Don Muang International Airport.

The projects are offering aircraft maintenance centres, a flight-simulator training centre, a logistics centre, a warehouse for equipment and aircraft spare parts, a duty-free zone for imported luxury products such as cars to facilitate international exhibitions, and an exhibition centre.

"Except for the exhibition centre, all the businesses are related to flying, so we need to negotiate with the Treasury Department who leases the land to us before kicking off the exhibition centre project," he said.

All of the six projects are in the drafting process of the Term of References (ToR). The AoT expects that it can find interested parties to bid and invest in each project soon.

The AoT expects that its next move could help make the most use of its facilities.
