WRC stars show their support to Japan

Stars of the World Rally Championship have showed their support to those suffering in Japan following the terrible events in the country of late.

During last week’s Vodafone Rally de Portugal many competitors displayed ‘Pray for Japan’ and ‘Hope for Japan’ stickers on their cars while the leading crews held up a giant Japanese flag at the pre-event photoshoot in Lisbon with a message that read ‘We are with you, Japan’.

Petter Solberg, who drove for the factory Subaru team during an nine-year stretch in the world championship and who has a huge following in Japan, said: “It’s so hard on everybody what is happening and so sad. I have many fans in Japan and many friends and I have sent a lot of emails to them to make sure they are okay. We are all thinking of them in the WRC.”

Leading Production Car World Rally Championship runner Patrik Flodin, who drives a Subaru Impreza in the series, added: “We wanted to show we are caring about the disaster they are having. We want to give our fans in Japan some support and say ‘hello’ and show we are thinking about them. Subaru is from Japan so it’s very important we do this because we have good support from there and a lot of fans.”

Rally Japan has been a popular addition to the WRC calendar since it first joined the schedule in 2004. Several Japanese car makes have experienced success at world championship level including Mitsubishi, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota, while leading Japanese driver Toshi Arai is a two-time Production Car world champion.
