Thanks to a decisive Mandanda and the fantastic inspiration of Cheyrou, OM pulled off a great operation in Week 29 by winning away to Lens (0-1).
OM had the chance to pull off a great operation on Sunday. Mission accomplished, they left Lens with the loot, and more, remaining four points behind the leaders Lille. Now three and four points behind, Rennes and Lyon nervously stalled this weekend while the Olympians kept their composure. That's the difference.
Because it was needed in a white-hot Bollaert against a Lens side galvanized by the specter of relegation that is becoming more real after Week 29. OM did "not put in a great game" as the hero Cheyrou confided after the game, but they won and that's the main thing.
The incredible run (see below) continues for the best team in the league in 2011.
Especially when it's not going so well, there are those senior players who can be relied on. It was this time the class of a Mandanda decisive on two occasions when the score was 0-0. Then the little stroke of genius from Cheyrou on the hour mark to turn all this work into a vital victory (69’). The champions have not said their final word and will have to be reckoned with until the end. This ground out success is an obvious example.
This was an encounter that OM in which OM started well, yet the litany of free-kicks obtained by OM did not bring the expected danger to the goal of Runje. There was a great deal of waste in these situations and generally a lack of offensive creativity that gave hope to Lens, who were up until then struggling: the header from Eduardo which grazed the crossbar was a warning (33’).

Would this inspire the Olympians who obtained one after another two great opportunities? First of all Remy did not win his duel with Runje (37’) before a shot from Lucho which the Croatian saved in a weird position (39’). The pace went up a notch in the last fifteen minutes of a half deemed "lackluster" by Mathieu Valbuena. OM could have returned to the locker room behind if it was not for their fantastic goalkeeper. Mandanda’s save from the header of Jemaa (41') kept hopes alive.
But did not address the concerns as the restart was very complicated for Marseille. There was another save from Mandanda who parried a shot from Hermach (51’) in front of his national team coach Erik Gerets. The volley from Roudet at the far post was off target (63’). OM were suffering, which led Didier Deschamps to reshaping his attack on the hour mark. Coming on for Valbuena, Gignac moved out to the left flank, Remy remained in the centre and André Ayew on the right. Looking sharp with his first steps on the pitch, Gignac played in Lucho on the edge of the area, who then slid the ball to Cheyrou. From 18 metres out he pulled the ball back with his left foot and sent in a curling right foot effort, leaving Runje and Lens stunned (0-1, 69’). This was the inspiration needed in this tight encounter.
"We controlled things better" said the coach after the game, enough to contain the final attempts of Lens and a Maoulida who strangely came on so late, with only 15 minutes to go. The goal from Jemaa after a charge on Mandanda was logically ruled out (83’) and the Olympians can keep on dreaming...

- Since early 2011, the Olympians have taken 25 points from a possible 30 in the league. Nobody has done better, Lille have managed 23.

Le champion n’a pas dit son dernier mot (0-1)
Grâce à un Mandanda décisif et à l'inspiration géniale de Cheyrou, l'OM réalise la grosse opération de la 29e journée en allant s'imposer à Lens (0-1).
L’OM avait une belle opération à faire ce dimanche. Mission accomplie, il repart de l’Artois avec le magot, et bien plus encore en restant à quatre longueurs du leader lillois. Désormais à trois et quatre points, Rennes et Lyon ont nerveusement calé ce week-end alors que les Olympiens ont gardé leur sang-froid. C’est là toute la différence.
Car il en fallait dans un stade Bollaërt chauffé à blanc face à des sang et or galvanisés par le spectre d’une relégation qui prend encore plus de corps après cette 29e journée. L’OM n’a «pas fait un grand match» comme le confiait le héros Cheyrou après la partie, mais il l’a gagné et c’est bien là le principal.
La série démoniaque (voir plus bas) se poursuit pour la meilleure équipe du championnat en 2011.
Surtout que quand ça va un peu moins bien, il y a ces cadres sur lesquels on peut compter. Ce fut cette fois la classe d’un Steve Mandanda décisif à deux reprises alors que le score était de zéro partout. Puis le petit coup de génie de Cheyrou à l’heure de jeu pour transformer tout ce labeur en victoire capitale (69e). Le champion n’a pas dit son dernier mot et il faudra compter sur lui jusqu’au bout. Ce succès au métier en est un exemple patent.
Car ce fut une rencontre que l’OM prit d’abord par le bon bout avec une entame teintée de maîtrise. Pourtant, la kyrielle de coups de pieds arrêtés obtenus par l’OM n’amenait pas le danger attendu devant le but de Runje. Pas mal de gâchis dans ces situations et globalement un certain manque de créativité offensive qui redonnaient probablement espoir à des Lensois jusque-là dépassés : la tête d’Eduardo qui embrassait la transversale avait valeur d’avertissement (33e).

De quoi inspirer les Olympiens qui se procuraient coup sur coup deux grosses occas’ ? Remy ne gagnait d’abord pas son duel avec Runje (37e) avant la frappe de Lucho dans la surface que le Croate captait dans une position bizarre (39e). Le rythme montait d’un cran dans le dernier quart d’heure de cette mi-temps jugée «en demi-teinte» par Mathieu Valbuena. Car l’OM aurait pu retourner aux vestiaires la tête dans le sac sans son impérial gardien. La claquette féline de Mandanda sur la tête de Jemaa (41e) permettait de maintenir tous les espoirs.
Mais pas de calmer les inquiétudes tant le retour des vestiaires fut houleux pour les Marseillais. Rebelote même avec une nouvelle parade de Steve sur une frappe d’Hermach (51e) sous les yeux de son sélectionneur Erik Gerets. La reprise écrasée de Roudet au deuxième poteau était hors-cadre (63e). L’OM souffrait, ce qui a probablement amené Didier Deschamps à remodeler son attaque à l’heure de jeu. Entré à la place de Valbuena, Gignac passait à gauche, Remy restait dans l’axe et André Ayew filait à droite. Saignant dès ses premiers pas sur la pelouse nordiste, Gignac décalait alors Lucho à l’entrée de la surface qui transmettait fissa vers Cheyrou. Aux 18 mètres, son crochet court du gauche lui permettait d’enrouler du droit en laissant Runje et Lens pantois (0-1, 69e). L’inspiration qu’il fallait dans cette partie bloquée.
«On a une meilleure maîtrise» dira en substance le coach après la rencontre. Suffisamment pour contenir les derniers sursauts de Lens et d’un Maoulida étrangement entré si tard à un quart de la fin. Le but de Jemaa après une charge sur Mandanda était logiquement invalidé (83e) et les Olympiens peuvent continuer à rêver…

- L'OM a mis fin ce dimanche au signe indien à Lens. Avant cette victoire, le dernier succès dans l'Artois remontait à 2003 !
