Valencia 2011: A Race of Records and Statistics

2011 has been a season of many new endeavours and records being broken. One of which has been the record set by the Canadian Grand Prix, being the longest Great Race ever held in Formula One's history due to torrential rain. Here's a look at some of the feats achieved during the weekend's race.

First thing's first, anybody even without an eagle eye or sharp hearing would have noticed that all 24 entrys were classified and finished the race. The last time this occured was the controvertial 2005 United States Grand Prix whereby only 6 car's began the race. Perhaps this is a sign that the DRS is causing the driver's to bide their time when racing each other, as opposed to diving into manuvres?

Since the 2010/2011 grid is the biggest grid in Formula One history (Not counting the Indianapolis 500 when it was classed as an F1 event) the weekend's 24 finishers is also the largest group of drivers to finish a race, also meaning that Narain Karthikeyan beat his own record of being the lowest recorded finisher in Grand Prix history in a lowly 24th position.

Now we focus on Sebastian Vettel. As of the European Grand Prix, Seb has led more laps in 2011 than he did all together in 2010. Who says you have to lead every lap to win a world title? This self achievement is a testament to the raw pace of the 2011 Red Bull Renault, as well as Vettel's new found professionalism and talent.

Additionally Seb is the first person to go 8 races into a Formula One season without finishing lower than 2nd. Not even seven time World Champion Michael Schumacher could muster this and he was racing against less skilled drivers in his peak, as opposed to drivers like Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber now.

So there we have it, just some of the statistics from the weekend's Grand Prix, and due to the continual innovation and changes during this season, its likely we'll see many more records broken!
