A free two-week photography exhibition showcasing magic moments from over 60 years of British Grands Prix will be opened tonight (Tuesday) by its curators – Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button.

The Santander ‘Driven to do Better’ exhibition, at the Getty Images Gallery in London, launches tonight with a star-studded party and is then open to the public from June 29 to July 16.

Lewis and Jenson hand-picked photographs on display, which evoke the characters, the colour, the noise, the speed, the memories and most of all the passion of the British Grand Prix.

Iconic images in the exhibition include Nigel Mansell giving arch-rival Ayrton Senna a lift back to the pits on the sidepod of his car after an emotional win in 1991, Graham Hill arriving for work on a monkey bike and Daily Express journalist Bob McKenzie running the track in silver body paint after losing a bet with McLaren chairman Ron Dennis.

As well as curating the exhibition Lewis and Jenson have chosen five personal favourites each from the tens of thousands of British GP images in the Getty archive.

“Making my selection reminded me of some of my earliest experiences in motorsport,” said Lewis. “Sitting with my dad watching drivers like Ayrton Senna on the TV. It also brought home what a privilege it is to be on the list of drivers who have won the British Grand Prix. It’s a classic event at one of the best race circuits in the world – and, most importantly, it’s a race for the people: there really is nothing better than being cheered on by 100,000 passionate British fans.”

Jenson too had huge praise for the fans at Silverstone. “The British Grand Prix is a race I’ve always loved because the support from the fans throughout the whole weekend is always amazing,” he said. “Helping to select these images brought back lots of happy childhood memories about what first made me want to be a racing driver: the heroes, the machines and the circuits. The Santander ‘Driven to do better’ exhibition provides a great insight into one of the most iconic and important events in the British sporting calendar.”

The Santander ‘Driven to do better’ exhibition runs from June 29 to July 16 at the Getty Images Gallery, 46 Eastcastle Street, London W1W 8DX.
