JENSON BUTTON: SORRY, BUT I WANT TO STORM THIS

JENSON BUTTON wishes to apologise to the British fans making the annual pilgrimage to Silverstone this weekend.

Jenson Button is looking for a brolly good show at Silverstone

It is actually a double apology as Jenson Button looks back on 11 campaigns at the British Grand Prix and forward to Sunday.

The 2009 world champion is very unusual for while Johnny Herbert, David Coulthard, Damon Hill, Nigel Mansell and Lewis Hamilton have all won their home race, Button has not only missed out on the victory champagne, he has never stood on the podium.

Take a poll in the Thatched Tavern or any pub of a Friday night: Which British driver has failed to make the top three in 11 attempts at Silverstone and you can collect a fiver.

Someone will swear that they have seen Button on the podium. He swears too, but in a different way as he considers the figures – two fourths in 2004 and 2010, a fifth, sixth, eighth, 10th, 12th, 15th and two retirements.

“Crazy, isn’t it,” says Button, 31, who has tried with Williams, Benetton, BAR, Honda, Brawn in his championship year and now McLaren. “It’s not for want of trying. Every year I think how great it would be but it has not happened yet.

“For any driver their home grand prix is special. You get the same points but knowing that you have done it in front of a crowd where most people are cheering for you has got to be special. This is one I would love to win, it is something that is missing in my trophy cabinet.

"But it’s not the trophy. Even if we didn’t get given trophies and champagne to stand on top of the podium, just to be in front of all the British fans would be something I’d never forget.”

Last month, he thrilled a global audience by coming from last to snatch first from Sebastian Vettel halfway round the final lap of an extraordinary Canadian Grand Prix when the world champion cracked.
