Schumacher's Struggles

18 months into his comeback, it's hardly been like the old days for Michael Schumacher. There were glimpses of his former-self last year, that audacious move on Alonso in Monaco, strong races in Belgium, Japan and Korea, but nothing to build upon. In fact, in some races he was no less than a danger to others and looked out of his depth.

This year the performances are better, yes Rosberg is getting the results, but Schumacher appears to be driving a pretty solid season, even if he has got through a year’s worth of front wings already.

In the opening three races he appeared to be faster than Nico, culminating in the best race of his comeback in Canada.

But is it really a surprise that Michael is struggling in what is the old Honda team? Had they not pumped resources into the 2009 car there is nothing to suggest that they would of improved massively on 2008. Somewhat ironic then that a spring from the former Honda car gave Schumacher his first opportunity of a comeback on that fateful day in Hungary. Had he returned in 2009 in the Ferrari, what would the outcome of been? Would he of shone at Spa and Monza as Kimi did? Or would his results been closer to those of Fisichella and, whisper it, Badoer?

Schumacher’s contract has an option for 2012, will he take it? Will he benefit from another year? What does he have to lose? How will we remember him? Maybe for the sake of nostalgia it may be time to go.
