Over 100,000 of you follow us on Twitter!
Today at the McLaren Technology Centre not only are we enjoying Jenson’s awesome victory in Hungary, but we’re also celebrating the exciting news that the official Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Twitter page, @TheFifthDriver, now has over 100,000 followers (or “drivers”, as we like to call them). In the couple of hours after Jenson’s win at his milestone 200th grand prix, the numbers surged and we reached our very own mini-milestone with over 100,000 people following our engimatic FifthDriver!
We’ve been using our Twitter channel to communicate with our fans since March 2009 and in the two and half years since its launch, we’ve continued to see its popularity grow and grow. @TheFifthDriver brings McLaren fans an insight into our world – from updates about the McLaren Technology Centre, to reporting the latest happenings from the team, we provide a constant news flow to our international followers.
As well as acting as a message board for our fans, @TheFifthDriver has also broken big stories to the world, including the first ever driver announcement on Twitter, when we confirmed Jenson’s contract with the team in 2009.
Avid followers will know that we also like a bit of fun on our twitter feed and we’ve been known for our ‘#MTCSwanWatch’, following the daily, monthly and now yearly developments of the beautiful birds that reside in the MTC lake in Woking!
More recently, we’ve started a weekly Friday initiative, #SocialFriday, giving fans a unique opportunity to ask us their questions about the team. It’s a completely open forum and we’ve received questions about anything and everything - from scientific questions about the design of the car or the physical performance of our drivers, to how many sugars Martin Whitmarsh has in his tea! In tandem with the McLaren.com Pitwall, which provides running commentary and data live from the track over a race weekend, we aim to answer as many questions as possible and this has proven to be an effective, fun and fast-moving way of interacting with our followers.
Nominated for a prestigious Shorty Award in 2010, @TheFifthDriver has been cited as one of the top 5 F1 twitter feeds on the networking site and we’re proud that it’s also hit the number one spot on a number of occasions, a position that we want to maintain in the future. Of course, this isn’t just down to us. We rely on you, our fans, to stay with us and keep interacting with @TheFifthDriver. We read every comment and make sure to take it all on board.
Our 100,000 followers on Twitter are joined by more than 375,000 fans who 'like' our official Facebook page (www.facebook.com/vodafonemclarenmercedes), as well as the numerous people who log onto our website every week (www.mclaren.com/formula1).
In this increasingly connected world, the web is paramount in enabling us to stay in touch with our fans around the world so we encourage you to keep following, keep retweeting and, of course, keep believing ;-) #BelieveInMcLaren
