Another F1 street circuit, another Vettel pole – made all the sweeter as his team-mate is bang next to him to ensure it's an all Red Bull Racing front row tomorrow night.
While Sebastian topped each of the three sessions this evening, Mark worked his way steadily through the field finishing fifth in Q1, and third in Q2 before taking the second spot on the Singapore grid.
Webber paid tribute to Vettel before commenting on his own achievement. He said: “Seb laid it down pretty hard and fast for all of us today – he’s very quick round here and he did a great job for the pole. Overall I’m satisfied and given the curveballs that teams can face around here, to have both cars up there is a great result for us.”
There were certainly moments during the sessions, the most spectacular being Kobayashi’s launch off the second kerb in the chicane into the Turn 10 barriers, which brought out the red flag, and an end to his participation.
The mantra is though that ‘this is only Qualifying’. Our drivers know that tomorrow is a race over bumpy tarmac, in unique conditions around high kerbs surrounded by tight, solid barriers.
As Sebastian said afterwards: “We kept our heads cool and did it today. It’s great we have both cars on the front row, but let’s see tomorrow, it’s a very, very long race.”
But it makes it four poles out of four poles for the German on this season’s street circuits. And he didn’t fare badly racing in Melbourne, Monaco or Valenica.
We’ll see what tomorrow brings, but also acknowledge the collective effort which Christian described as “a fantastic team performance - to secure an all-front row is phenomenal.”
