Alonso to start fifth in Suzuka
11/10/2011
Fernando Alonso will start from fifth place on the grid on Sunday in Suzuka. The Spanish driver is convinced that there will be "a lot of tyre degradation, and that will be the key to the race as it is possible there will be a lot of pitstops".
Fernando Alonso will start from fifth, on the clean side of the track, in the Japanese Grand Prix. The Spaniard set a final time of 1:30.886 in qualifying, which was won by Sebastien Vettel. Fernando, who lost one attempt at a fast lap in Q3 when he went slightly off the track, will be going all out in a race in which he vows to fight to the finish.
Free 3
Fernando finished fourth in Free3 for the Japanese Grand Prix. The Spaniard was unable to spend too long out on the track, as Bruno Senna's accident occurred when Alonso had only just completed his installation lap.
Alonso nonetheless created a very good impression, a particularly important factor in Free3.
Alonso: "A podium finish is the most realistic objective"
Fernando claimed after the qualifying session that a podium place would be the "most realistic objective" for the race. "This result does not surprise me. In the end the McLarens and Red Bulls were faster than us, although we at least managed to finish ahead of (Mark) Webber. It seems that this year I'm destined to be fifth. At least I will be starting from the clean side of the track," said Alonso.
"I expect a lot of tyre degradation on Sunday and that will be the key to this race as it is possible there will be a lot of pitstops, which means that strategy will play a very important role. I hope we don't have the (tyre) problems we had in Singapore two weeks ago," he added.
Alonso will try to "make the best choice" for Sunday and "try to fight for a place on the podium, which is the most realistic objective. A win would be a more distant goal".
