Alonso claims strong second place in Suzuka

11/10/2011

Fernando Alonso finished second having produced an excellent race in Suzuka, where Sebastian Vettel was proclaimed world champion.

Fernando Alonso secured his eighth podium finish of the season having completed a very fine race in Suzuka. The Spanish driver, who withstood Vettel's predatory charges with some ten laps still to go, handled his tyres expertly in response to the severe degradation they suffered on this track.

The Spaniard will continue to fight for runners-up place in the world championship next week at the Yeongam circuit.

Fernando explained that at the Suzuka track he finally found he had enough pace to challenge the McLarens and Red Balls. "It was a fun race. I was unable to overtake anyone at the start, and then there was a lot of tyre degradation," declared Alonso after achieving his best finish since last month, when he likewise claimed second place in the German Grand Prix.

"We had the pace to be able to challenge McLaren and Red Bull," added Alonso at the exclusive press conference for the top three drivers at each race.

It is a fantastic podium finish for the team after a number of tough races when we weren't competitive. This place means a lot for the team and gives everyone great motivation," said Alonso, third in the world championship standings eight points behind Briton's Jenson Button (McLaren), who is second, and just eight in front of fourth place, the Australian Mark Webber (Red Bull).
