From the Dordogne to Delhi
30/10/2011
With the first ever Indian Grand Prix poised to take place it’s been a busy time for the LRGP team and all its partners including Total.
India will host its first ever F1 race today, giving Total the opportunity to once again showcase its technical expertise and commitment to supporting its partners. The products that will be used by the Lotus Renault GP team in Delhi are actually created millions of kilometers away, in France.
On May 11, 2005, Total consolidated its additives and special fuels teams at the Givors Oil Terminal south of Lyon to form a dedicated subsidiary. Today, Total Additives & Special Fuels operates primarily out of the Givors site and benefits from its close ties with Total’s research centers. The strategically located site brings together all of the skills necessary for the development of products designed for motor racing. Among the men and women working at this low-profile, high-security facility is a cross-functional team involved in Total’s F1 program.
For some of the researchers tasked with developing products for motor sports—whether at Total Additives & Special Fuels or in our research centers—Formula One is a vocation. That’s because F1 racing is not just a showcase for our products. The aim is to develop fuels and lubricants that not only comply with technical specifications but also deliver significant advantages. Our F1 program also plays an important role in terms of research by giving us a better understanding of certain phenomena and ultimately enabling us to make improvements to our formulations that go well beyond the F1 circuit.
Getting our products to the racetrack requires a considerable amount of organization. With around 20 Grand Prix races a year, the F1 fuel production cycle must be carefully planned, and delivery to the race location demands impeccable logistics. The motto is “be ready.” For this event, a total of 1,500 liters of gasoline, 90 liters of engine oil, 60 liters of transmission oil, 40 liters of hydraulic fluid, 15 liters of engine coolant and several kilograms of various greases have been delivered to the Lotus Renault GP garage in India.
