Sculpture Group 52 Exhibition: Developments in Dimension

More than one hundred sculptures created by alumni from Silpakorn University's Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts are currently on display at Krung Thai Art Gallery until October 22.
The event, entitled 'Sculpture Group 52 Exhibition', was organized by a group of the faculty's alumni to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the university and demonstrate how their work has developed over time.
Tanomchit Chumwong, head of the faculty's Sculpture Department, says the event features works of art created by alumni who have graduated since the faculty's inception in 1944. Each participant selected an item from his or her most recent works to be included in the exhibition, according to Tanomchit.
The power of creativity
“We’d like to show the [general] public how each of us has found our own path through the development of our sculptures,” says Tanomchit, who graduated in 1989.
Tanomchit's contribution to the exhibition, entitled 'home3', was developed over the past couple of years and represents one of the artist's most recent works. The wooden sculpture, which comprises a structure of interconnecting rectangular frames, is said to represent life, family, and the home environment.
Meanwhile, Nonthivathn Chandhanaphalin, a National Artist who graduated from Silpakorn in 1975, chose to contribute a sculpture called 'Desire', which he says is one of his favorite study models in highlighting the most suitable relationship between form and space as an expression of human desire. The artist says he plans to produce a full-size version in the near future.
“The event provides an occasion through which artists can showcase the power of their creativity in the field of sculpture, while at the same time allowing them to express their views about the current state of society,” according to Nonthivathn.
Other outstanding examples of sculpture on display at the exhibition include works by Wichai Sithirat, Khemrat Kongsook, Sarawuth Duangchampa, Napadol Wirunchatapan, along with scores more produced by the various different generations of artists who have graduated from the faculty since its establishment in 1944.
Many of those who have contributed works to the exhibition have gone on to become art lecturers themselves at various educational establishments across the country.
The exhibition represents a collaboration between Silpakorn University, Krung Thai Bank, and the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture.
The event is open to the general public from now until October 22, from 9 am-4 pm. Admission is free.
