The Continental is probably one of the most important models for Bentley. The entry-level Conti not only spawned several performance variants and body styles but also helped yank the brand's annual production to new levels.

First Conti GT came out in 2003.

Thanks to being part of the Volkswagen Group, Bentley has quick access to technology and marketing expertise.

By using just one basic engine, the Conti's 6.0-litre W12 had three levels of performance: 560hp in regular guise (now up to 575hp), 611hp in Speed form and 630hp in Supersport uniform.

The Continental also yielded three body silhouettes: the Coupe, as driven here, GTC convertible and Flying Spur saloon. The latter two bodies also got performance treatment, although the Flying Spur missed out on Supersport.

Expect Bentley to continue with this formula with the new Continental. And company insiders say there will be even more variations and special edition models scattered throughout its product lifecycle in order to maintain sales zest _ the Porsche way.
